‘Idomeneo’ at San Francisco Opera

Matthew Polenzani returns to San Francisco Opera this June 14, 17, 20, 22, and 25, appearing as the title role in Mozart’s sublime opera seria, Idomeneo. The tenor has sung the role to great acclaim on some of the world’s greatest stages, including The Metropolitan Opera, Bayerische Staatsoper, and Lyric Opera of Chicago. Bachtrack praised his performance at The Met, saying, “Versatile tenor Matthew Polenzani was an exemplary Idomeneo with his smooth, clear and lyrical voice and calm but authoritative stage presence.”

Polenzani joins a cast of outstanding Mozartians, led by LA Opera Music Director Eun Sun Kim. Daniela Mack sings his son Idamante, with Ying Fang as Ilia, Elza van den Heever as Elettra, Alek Shrader as Arbace, Samuel White as the High Priest of Neptune, and Jongwon Han as the Voice of the Oracle. Lindy Hume’s new production uses stunning projections of craggy coastlines and raging seas to illustrate the tension between people and their environment, with nature becoming more and more unstable the longer Idomeneo avoids fulfilling his vow.
