‘Werther’ in Vienna
On March 5, 8, 11, and 14, Matthew Polenzani returns to the title role in Massenet’s heartbreaking tragedy, Werther, at the Wiener Staatsoper. Polenzani is a lauded interpreter of the role; of his recent performance at Houston Grand Opera, Houston Press said, “Polenzani supplies heft and control. His showstopping reverie, ‘Pourquoi me reveille’ is a dream come true.” He has also sung the role at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Konzerthaus Dortmund, and Bayerische Staatsoper.
Polenzani joins an exceptional cast in Andrei Serban’s updated staging, singing under the baton of Bertrand de Billy. Kate Lindsey sings Charlotte, with Clemens Unterreiner as Albert, ans Florina Ilie as Sophie.
