Munich Opera Festival – summer performances

Matthew Polenzani returns to the Bayerische Staatsoper this July, to star two of his signature portrayals as part of the Munich Opera Festival. Mr. Polenzani begins the month singing Tamino in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte on July 6 & 8. The cast also features Hanna Elisabeth Müller as Pamina, René Pape as Sarastro, and Olga Pudova sings the Queen of the Night. Please note ticket availability is extremely limited for both dates.

“Is there a better Mozart tenor before the public than Matthew Polenzani? Unlikely. The Evanston native brought a fresh element to the show, singing with rich, vibrant tone as well as a dramatic urgency that elevated the entire production. His “Dies Bildnis” was a model of supreme Mozart style–elegant yet impassioned with a fluent, seamless line.” (Chicago Classical Review – Lyric Opera of Chicago production)

Following his performances as Tamino, Polenzani brings his “exquisite” (Opera News) interpretation of Fernand to the stage in Donizetti’s La Favorite. The performances, hosted on July 26 & 29, feature much of the production’s premiere cast including with Elīna Garanča as Léonor de Guzman and Mariusz Kwiecień as Alphonse XI. Karel Mark Chichon leads the Bayerische Staatsorchester for these dates, highlighting a staging by Amélie Niermeyer.
